Yaqui Joe Herrera (Burt Reynolds) robs a bank in Arizona and rides south for Mexico, with the lawman Lydecker (Jim Brown) close behind him. Across the border, General Verdugo (Fernando Lamas) is waging a war on the Yaqui, and both men end up locked in his prison. Tom Gries follows Lydecker into the hills, where Sarita (Raquel Welch) fights for her people and a man hired to bring in one thief starts to doubt whose side he is on.
