Sing Sing Penitentiary in Ossining, New York, takes in Tommy Connors (Spencer Tracy), a brash hoodlum who walks through the gates sure of himself and sneering at every guard. Warden Paul Long (Arthur Byron) runs the place with a firm hand and a stubborn streak of compassion, and Michael Curtiz keeps the cellblocks cramped and close. Outside the walls, Fay Wilson (Bette Davis) waits, and the visits between them are all the two have.
