Phillip Hannon (Van Johnson) is a blind American playwright in London who overhears a fragment of conversation in a pub and takes it for a plot to kidnap a child. The police won't listen, so he sets out with his butler to track down the men himself. Henry Hathaway keeps Phillip close to Jean Lennox (Vera Miles), the ex-fiancée who still cares for him and whom he keeps at arm's length.
