In Germany, Astrid (Julia Jentsch) earns her living on stage as a comedian, with her husband Markus (Bjarne Mädel) managing her bookings and a nine-year-old daughter waiting at home. Anne Zohra Berrached begins with the family expecting a second child, then follows the day they learn the baby will not be born healthy. Markus and Astrid keep talking and keep arguing, each trying to stay on the other's side, though the choice that has to be made belongs to her alone.
