In a closet full of bridesmaid gowns, Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) keeps proof that she has stood up at 27 other people's weddings. Anne Fletcher follows her as her younger sister Tess (Malin Akerman) turns up with an engagement announcement. The groom is George (Edward Burns), the man Jane has quietly adored, and Jane has to decide whether to speak up or keep smiling.
