Three outlaws on the run, Robert Hightower (John Wayne), Pete (Pedro Armendáriz) and the Abilene Kid (Harry Carey Jr.), come upon a dying woman and her newborn baby in the desert. They swear to carry the child to safety, whatever it costs them. John Ford shoots the trek in Technicolor, three men on foot under the sun with an infant in their arms.
