In a dusty California desert town, Millie Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall) works at a spa for the elderly, talking constantly and sure that everyone admires her. Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek), an awkward teenager, starts at the same job and soon moves in as Millie's roommate. Robert Altman has Janice Rule's pregnant Willie Hart watching nearby, and the two women's friendship starts to cost each of them who she is.
