In Tokyo, 23-year-old Yuma Takada (Mei Kayama) draws manga for a ghostwriting job she can't put her own name to. She lives with her mother, Yasuko (Misuzu Kanno), who has looked after her for life and still bathes and dresses her. When an editor says her love scenes ring false and sends her out to gain some experience, Yuma starts leaving the apartment alone. Hikari, who also wrote it, films Yuma's days at her level, so the city looks as large as it feels to her.
