“At what moment do we begin to live?”

Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) is a university student in Communist Romania, and she spends one day handling every arrangement for her roommate Găbiță (Laura Vasiliu), who needs an illegal abortion before it is too late. Cristian Mungiu follows her through a dormitory, a hotel and a stranger's offer to help, each step carrying its own price. Otilia keeps moving through it all with the steady face of someone who cannot afford to stop.
