In 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) signs Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to play in the major leagues, the first Black man to do it. Brian Helgeland follows Robinson through that season as fans, reporters and teammates turn on him, with his wife Rachel (Nicole Beharie) beside him. Rickey has demanded he answer none of it, so every insult has to be swallowed, and if he breaks, the door closes behind him.
