In feudal Japan, when a lord's death leaves his samurai masterless and his domain in the hands of the man who killed him, forty-seven warriors are cast out. Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada) leads them, joined by Kai (Keanu Reeves), a half-outsider who has never been counted as one of them. Carl Rinsch sends the band into a series of trials, and the story turns on what a man owes the master who has died.
