“THE MIGHTEST MANHUNT THAT EVER SWEPT THE SCREEN!”

Lieutenant Hirth (Eric Portman) is a German U-boat commander stranded in Canada after his sub is sunk in Hudson Bay, with a handful of men and one aim, to reach the United States, still neutral. Michael Powell sends them across the country, where they meet Johnnie the trapper (Laurence Olivier) and Peter (Anton Walbrook). Hirth keeps his men moving and his orders simple, and the farther he gets from the water, the less sure his certainty looks.
