“A card cheat was hung... then all hell broke loose!”

In 1968, a poker game among drunken men ends with a card cheat dragged outside and lynched. Soon afterward, the men who sat at that table begin dying one at a time, each found hanged. Van Morgan (Dean Martin), a gambler who was there that night, watches the circle shrink while Henry Hathaway keeps him close to Reverend Rudd (Robert Mitchum), a man he cannot read.
