Ben Stride (Randolph Scott) is a former sheriff riding after the seven men who robbed a Wells Fargo office and left his wife dead. On the trail he falls in with John Greer (Walter Reed) and Annie Greer (Gail Russell), a couple heading west for California, and crosses paths again with Bill Masters (Lee Marvin), an outlaw he once arrested. Budd Boetticher keeps the country dry and wide, and Stride sits his horse in it, hat low, saying very little.
