“Love-Lust, Courage and Cowardice, Faith-Fury and Sacrifice!”

In 1935, Mongolian bandits led by the warlord Tunga Khan bear down on an American mission in China, where a small group of women has little to hold the gate with. Dr. D.R. Cartwright (Anne Bancroft) arrives to treat a sickness among them, and the mission's head, Agatha Andrews (Margaret Leighton), has no use for her. John Ford, directing his last feature after fifty-three years, keeps nearly the whole film inside the compound walls.
