The bookie's racket in Los Angeles runs on phone lines, and the man who makes them work is Mal Granger (Edmond O'Brien), a telephone repairman who knows exactly how to wire a betting operation. When the bookie is murdered, Mal takes over the business and climbs through the local syndicate. Joseph M. Newman follows him upward until a mob from the East Coast arrives wanting a share of what he has built.
