“How far would you go to score the ultimate gift?”

Ten-year-old Jake Doyle (Winslow Fegley) wants one thing in the suburban Chicago of the late 1980s: the newest video game system, and he is ready to go to enormous lengths to get it. Years later, Jake (Neil Patrick Harris) tells the story to his own daughter, and Michael Dowse fills the telling with parents and neighbors who all seem to be in his way. Jake's father John (Steve Zahn) is a harder case, a man who loves his son and is not sure he can give him this.
