A package arrives in a New York apartment from a London bookshop, addressed to a woman who has never met anyone there. Helene Hanff (Anne Bancroft), a script-reader with a dry wit, answered an ad in the Saturday Review of Literature, and her letters to Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) at Marks & Co., 84 Charing Cross Road, open a friendship. David Hugh Jones films the long distance between them mostly through the letters themselves.
