Ernie Driscoll (John Payne) was a boxer once and now drives a taxi, a man with a bad past in the ring and a wife, Pauline (Peggie Castle), who never lets him forget it. Phil Karlson drops him into a tangle with jewel thieves, and Linda James (Evelyn Keyes) is one of the few people in the city who looks at him kindly. Ernie sits behind the wheel of the cab, his knuckles still thick from the fights.
