David (Colin Farrell) and Sarah (Margot Robbie) are both single and both alone when they meet at a mutual friend's wedding. A turn of fate sends them off together, and Kogonada has them step back into important moments from their own pasts, the ones that explain how each of them got to where they stand now. The pasts are open to them for a while, and so, possibly, are their futures, though only if they can bear to look.
