In 1980s Woburn, Massachusetts, a cluster of families believes the town's water has been poisoning their children. Jan Schlichtmann (John Travolta), a personal injury lawyer who picks his cases by the payout, hears them out and plans to turn it down, until he sees how much the case could be worth. Steven Zaillian sets him against Jerome Facher (Robert Duvall), the sharp, rumpled attorney for the corporations, and the two circle each other with growing contempt.
