Nobody on this set can say which film is being made, the 18th-century one or the one about the people making it. Steve Coogan plays Tristram Shandy and himself, an actor with a fragile ego, while Rob Brydon, cast as Uncle Toby, insists his part counts for as much as Coogan's. Michael Winterbottom follows the two men through a shoot at a stately home, where the rivalry over billing and who gets the better scenes has plainly outgrown the work.
