Anthony John (Ronald Colman) takes the lead in a stage production of Othello, opposite his former wife Brita (Signe Hasso). Night after night he plays a man consumed by jealousy, and the part begins to follow him out of the theater and into his own head. George Cukor stays close on Tony as the role settles in, and the people around him, among them Bill Friend (Edmond O'Brien), start to notice how little of him is left offstage.
