“A guy—a gal—a pal—it’s swell!”

Pete Sandidge (Spencer Tracy), a cocky Army Air Force pilot stationed in England, is killed on a mission over the war, and then he wakes to a heavenly General who has a job for him back on Earth. Victor Fleming sends him down to watch over a younger flier, Ted Randall (Van Johnson), who is falling for Dorinda Durston (Irene Dunne), the woman Pete loved. Pete can see her and cannot be seen, and each time he helps Ted, he gives up another piece of what he left.
