In New York City in the late 1950s, Johnny Pope (Don Murray), a Korean War veteran, comes home to a family that thinks he is fine. Fred Zinnemann gathers his wife Celia (Eva Marie Saint), his brother Polo (Anthony Franciosa) and his father (Lloyd Nolan) around a secret Johnny has been hiding, a morphine addiction left over from the war. Celia senses the lies in his explanations, and Johnny keeps deceiving the people who love him most.
