A Hen in the Wind

Tokiko Amamiya (Kinuyo Tanaka) waits in postwar Japan for her husband Shuichi (Shūji Sano) to come home, raising their four-year-old son on her own. When the boy falls ill and she cannot pay the doctor, she sells herself to cover the bill. Ozu lets Shuichi's return and her confession settle on a household that is poor and tired, and the marriage has to find a way to carry what she tells him.
