A Hidden Life

“Better to suffer injustice than to commit it.”

Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) is an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who wants only to work his land and raise his daughters with his wife Fani (Valerie Pachner). When the Second World War reaches the village, he refuses to swear allegiance to Hitler or fight for the Nazis, and the threat of execution follows. Terrence Malick places the weight of that choice on the marriage, on Fani, who stays beside him while the neighbors turn away.
