David (Haley Joel Osment) is a robotic boy built to love, and he wants only to be loved back. A Cybertronics employee and his wife, Monica (Frances O'Connor) and Henry Swinton (Sam Robards), take him in as a test case, and over time he becomes their child. Spielberg, working from Brian Aldiss's short story, builds a future that looks soft and clean on the surface and keeps the cold underneath.
