A King in New York

“The King of Comedians!”

King Shahdov (Charlie Chaplin) lands in New York with nowhere to go, driven off his throne in Estrovia, and finds himself on television almost by accident. Chaplin made the film in Europe after his exile from the U.S. in 1952, and it did not open in America until 1972. The trouble over who gets to call a man dangerous, and who gets to call him a celebrity, is what the picture keeps coming back to.
