Lily Brannel James (Lana Turner) leaves a small town in Kansas for New York, where a prestigious modeling agency takes her on and she rises fast. She falls in love with Steve Harleigh (Ray Milland), a married man, and George Cukor follows her through the agency's showrooms and the city's evenings. Lily wants the career and the man both, and she has to decide what she will pay for each.
