A flight from Los Angeles to New York puts Oliver Martin (Ashton Kutcher) in the seat beside Emily Friehl (Amanda Peet), and the two of them hit it off. By the time they land, both have decided they are wrong for each other, and Nigel Cole follows the seven years in which they keep running into one another anyway. Oliver and Emily drift from strangers to friends to the edge of being lovers, each waiting for the other to catch up.
