Lord Chancellor Thomas More (Paul Scofield) will not say why he cannot sign the letter asking the Pope to annul King Henry VIII's (Robert Shaw) marriage, and his silence unsettles everyone at court. Fred Zinnemann keeps the camera close as Cromwell (Leo McKern) hunts for a reason to make him swear the Oath of Supremacy. At home, Alice More (Wendy Hiller) watches her husband hold his ground, and she loves him too much to look away.
