“A woman's life falls apart after she's blamed for an accident on her property.”

On a dairy farm in a small Wisconsin community, Alice Goodwin (Sigourney Weaver) works as a school nurse and raises two daughters with her husband Howard (David Strathairn). An accident on her property involving the child of her friend Theresa (Julianne Moore) turns the town against her, and Alice is soon fighting charges of child abuse. Scott Elliott adapts Jane Hamilton's 1994 novel and keeps the camera close on Weaver as her neighbors withdraw.
