James Frey (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) checks into a treatment center in Minnesota at the bottom of a long run on drugs, ready to go through two months of detox. Leonard (Billy Bob Thornton) and Lilly (Odessa Young) are among the people he meets inside, each fighting an addiction of their own. Sam Taylor-Johnson, adapting Frey's 2003 book, keeps the camera close on his face as the withdrawal takes hold.
