Albert Quentin (Jean Gabin) keeps a hotel in a Normandy seaside town, and since the war he has kept a vow never to drink, for the sake of his family. Then Gabriel Fouquet (Jean-Paul Belmondo), an advertising man who loves his liquor and pictures himself as a Spanish hero, checks in, and Henri Verneuil lets the two men size each other up. Albert's years of staying sober, and the life his wife and family have built on them, are now in the room with a bottle.
