A Pure Formality

A man is picked up one night and brought to a remote police station, soaked and disoriented, with no clear memory of how he got there. He turns out to be Onoff (Gérard Depardieu), a famous writer who has lived as a recluse, and the Inspector (Roman Polanski) is not inclined to let him go. Giuseppe Tornatore confines nearly the whole film to the station and the single night of questioning.
