A Scene at the Sea

(1991)Directed by Takeshi Kitano101 minDrama, Romance, Comedy

Shigeru (Claude Maki), a deaf garbage collector, pulls a broken surfboard from a pile of discarded things and carries it home. He has never surfed, but he starts going to the water, and his girlfriend Takako (Hiroko Oshima), who is also deaf, goes with him and waits on the shore. Takeshi Kitano lets the two of them talk almost entirely in gesture, and the film comes down to one person showing up for another's stubborn, unlikely wish.
