In Sweden in 1947, a sailor comes home after seven years at sea and goes back in memory to the salvage ship he grew up on. Johannes (Birger Malmsten) lived there under Captain Alexander Blom (Holger Löwenadler), a father who ruled the deck and his family with the same hard hand, while Ingmar Bergman tells it in flashback. The young Johannes wants out, and a girl named Sally (Gertrud Fridh) is the other thing he wants.
