In middle school, Shouya Ishida (Miyu Irino) bullied a deaf girl, Shouko Nishimiya (Saori Hayami) until she transferred away. Years later, as a teenager carrying that cruelty, he seeks her out to apologize and make amends. Yamada draws their tentative reconnection with such gentleness that the possibility of forgiveness feels fragile enough to shatter, and what hangs in the balance is whether either of them can bear to be known.
