Why does a young Polish pianist's music pull so hard at the people around him, and at his own homeland? Professor Joseph Elsner (Paul Muni) brings his protégé Frédéric Chopin (Cornel Wilde) from Poland to Paris, where the novelist George Sand (Merle Oberon) takes him up and his old friends begin to fall away. Charles Vidor ends on Chopin at the keyboard, and the film follows him there from his years in Poland.
