In Hollywood in the 1930s, Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) is a farm girl with a head full of pictures, working a waitress shift at a party full of the people she wants to become. Norman Maine (Fredric March), her idol and a star on the way down, notices her, and William A. Wellman follows what that brings. Gaynor in her Technicolor red hair, March with a drink in his hand and the light going out of his face.
