“For anyone who has ever loved...”

In the rock and roll world of the mid-1970s, John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson) is a singing idol whose best years are behind him. He meets Esther Hoffman (Barbra Streisand), a young singer still working her way up, and the two fall in love. Frank Pierson follows them as her voice begins to carry further than his, and John has to find a way to live with that.
