A drowning leaves one twin alive and the other buried, and the survivor, Kate Bosworth (Bette Davis), lets the world believe she is the sister who died. She does it to get close to Bill Emerson (Glenn Ford), the man her sister Pat took from her years earlier. Curtis Bernhardt keeps Davis in both roles, and the film turns on what Kate owes the dead woman and what she takes from her.
