A Sunday in the Country

(1984)Directed by Bertrand Tavernier94 minDrama, Family
“Bertrand Tavernier's magnificent portrait of French family life on the brink of World War I”

Monsieur Ladmiral (Louis Ducreux) is an old painter in the French countryside, and every Sunday his son Gonzague (Michel Aumont) drives out with his wife and three children. This week his daughter Irène (Sabine Azéma) arrives too, in a hurry as always, living alone and seldom visiting. Bertrand Tavernier keeps the afternoon in the garden and at the lunch table, where what the family leaves unsaid is easier to see than what they say.
