Ernst Graeber (John Gavin), a German soldier on the Eastern Front, is granted a furlough and travels home during World War II. The city he finds has changed, and the neighbors he remembers are gone. Douglas Sirk shoots his romance with Elizabeth Kruse (Liselotte Pulver) in rich Eastmancolor and CinemaScope, so every color of their few days together stands against the war he must return to.
