On a Baja, California beach in 1959, a newly hatched sea turtle named Sammy (Yuri Lowenthal) runs for the water while seagulls and crabs close in. Ben Stassen follows him across fifty years of open ocean, where he dreams of travelling around the world and meets a fellow turtle named Ray. He also keeps hold of Shelly (Gemma Arterton), the turtle he saved on that first morning and has loved ever since.
