Anna Holm (Joan Crawford) blackmails people for a living, and the scar that runs down one side of her face has hardened her against everyone who flinches at it. Then she meets Dr. Gustaf Segert (Melvyn Douglas), a plastic surgeon who says he can give her a face people will not look away from. George Cukor keeps the two of them in close quarters, where his offer and her suspicion of it pass back and forth.
