Marian Washburn (Maureen O'Hara), a popular nightclub singer, wakes up one day with no voice and no explanation. Her piano player, Luke Jordan (Melvyn Douglas), stays loyal and puts a younger singer, Susan Caldwell (Gloria Grahame), on the club's stage in her place. Then Susan is shot, and the police look at Marian, who has to answer for a death she says she had no part in.
