Abe Lincoln in Illinois

(1940)Directed by John Cromwell110 minDrama, History
“Now on the screen!”

Abe Lincoln (Raymond Massey) leaves his father's farm in Decatur, Illinois, wanting a life of learning and the law, though he hardly knows what he is fit for. John Cromwell follows him through the years of his courtship of Mary Todd (Ruth Gordon) and his running against Stephen Douglas (Gene Lockhart). Every step he takes toward public life pulls him closer to the presidency and to a country that is coming apart.
