D. W. Griffith follows Abraham Lincoln (Walter Huston) from a frontier boyhood through his courtship of Ann Rutledge (Una Merkel), the debates with Stephen A. Douglas, and the election of 1860. The war years come next, told in short scenes that move from one chapter of his life to the following one. Huston plays a tall, rumpled man who carries the country on his shoulders, his jokes growing thinner as the dead pile up.
